Homemade Applesauce ( OLD FASHION)

Posted by: on Oct 7, 2011 | No Comments

I love my mom’s homemade sauces. Each one of them had a unique taste and smell. As a kid I spent most of my time in the kitchen trying to learn from my parents things like preserving, canning and cooking.

Last week I had the fortune of going to a neighbors house and take advantage of his apple trees.

I came home with 20 pounds of apples and boy! I was so excited. Fall is one of my favorite seasons of the year where out in the northwest we get to enjoy all different kinds and colors of pumpkins, squash, fruit and earthy ingredients like cinammon, nutmeg and cloves. This recipe reminds me of fall, from tart apples you get such a sour/sweet taste when you slow cook them and your house fills with a wonderful scent of spices. It’s a very simple recipe and anyone can do it.

This morning I fried some bacon and made some banana-apple pancakes (sans flour!) and my kids loved it.

This homemade applesauce will go great on top of cold pork too if you want something fresh for lunch or simply eat it with a spoon! AHHH and did i mention babys love it as well ….Enjoy :)

Ingredients:

8 medium size apples well washed, unpeeled, cut in half and cored  (sour apples preferably)

4 cups of water

1 tbs cinnamon

half of one lemon

1 tbs of honey (optional)

1 tbs of coconut oil (optional)

Quick note: This recipe makes 1 quart. I jared the sauce in 2 pint- sized glass jars, I flavored one of them with coconut oil and kept the other one plain)

Directions:

PLACE CORED APPLES IN A LARGE DEEP POT AND ADD THE 4 CUPS OF WATER. BRING TO A BOIL AND ZIMMER FOR 1 HOURS IN MEDIUM HEAT OR UNTIL APPLES DISSOLVE.

THE APPLES SHOULD LOOK LIKE THESE AFTER THE WATER HAS ALMOST EVAPORATED.

BLEND THE APPLES AND ADD THE HONEY IF YOU WANT THE APPLESAUCE A BIT SWEET ( I PERSONALLY LIKE IT WITHOUT IT, BUT IT MIGHT END UP TO SOUR FOR SOME PEOPLE)

IF YOU ARE USING COCONUT OIL IN ONE JAR, ADD IT AFTER YOU’VE POURED THE APPLESAUCE , STIR.

NOW YOU MIGHT STILL WONDER WHY I CALL IT OLD FASHION.

MOST RECIPES FOR APPLESAUCE CALL FOR PEELING THE APPLES.

I NEVER LEAVE OUT THE GOODIES : ))))
